What does subconscious mean?
Subconscious is the myriad of programs and filters that run in autopilot or semi-autopilot for you. Your subconscious mind is a vast operating system that regulates your body and a high percentage of your life.
Subconscious means that your conscious attention and focus is not needed for the programs of the subconscious mind to be working. The programs run automatically outside or beneath your conscious awareness.
In addition your subconscious mind store all your memories, as well as ancestral memories that were pass down through generations. The memories stored in your subconscious mind contain the interpretation or perception of the events of the memories.
Difference between subconscious and conscious?
Conscious mind, as opposed to subconscious mind, are your thoughts, decisions and actions that you are processing and/or acting on with awareness.
When you are in your conscious mind state you are in present moment fully aware of your thoughts, aware of your responses to life.
Another distinction is that the subconscious mind has a much larger processing capacity than the conscious mind. In terms of percentages, most literature, assigns 95 % or higher to the subconscious mind and just a few percentages to the conscious mind.
Conscious versus conscience
These two words are easy to mix up because they are spelled similarly; however they have different meanings.
Conscious is the state of being aware of our thoughts, reactions and actions. The key word for the definition of conscious is awareness.
Conscience is the system of beliefs that defines right versus wrong.
All beliefs are stored in the subconscious mind and the system of beliefs that define conscience is no exception.
Difference between subconscious and unconscious
There is no common consensus on the terms subconscious and unconscious. Are there differences? Or Are these words synonyms? Well, it depends how are you taking to.
Sigmund Freud divided the mind into conscious, pre-conscious and subconscious or unconscious. According to S. Freud subconscious and unconscious are synonyms.
Freud defined pre-conscious as the information that we can retrieve to our conscious mind. Examples are the memories that we bring into our present awareness.
On the other hand, most personal development literature divides the mind into two levels: Conscious and sub-conscious.
For the purpose of this post we are using the terms conscious and sub-conscious as the two states of functioning of our minds in the processing of information that makes up our individual self. We are not given different names to the memories easily retrieved into the conscious mind versus deep memories.
How does the subconscious mind work?
The subconscious mind work based on very complex pre-set programs or codes. For example, your subconscious mind is running a vast amount of functions of your body. All the cells and organs of your body are working in autopilot performing a mind-blowing number of functions thanks to the programs of your subconscious mind.
Your subconscious mind works analogous to computer software programs – or the apps of your smart-phone. Once the codes or programs are installed in your computer or smart-phone, they execute on demand the commands of the pre-set programs.
In this analogy, the preset codes or programs are the subconscious mind while the decision and action of installing or downloading the software programs or apps is the conscious mind.
A better illustration of how the subconscious mind works is artificial intelligence. The reason is that subconscious mind can create new programs based on life experiences or outside input. Similarly artificial intelligence is pre-programmed to change based on outside input.
The analogies of computer software program, smart phone apps and artificial intelligence are given to facilitate understanding the workings of your subconscious mind. In reality, the subconscious mind is much more complex and powerful than any cutting edge technologies.
The programs or codes, sometimes also called imprints, of the subconscious mind are embedded in your neural network. The power of your conscious mind to focus on beneficial thoughts changes the subconscious mind.

The power of your subconscious mind is the title of an influential book written by Joseph Murphy. This book influenced many of the nowadays well know teachers in the personal development, motivational and Law of Attraction fields.
I like the fact that Dr. Joseph Murphy not only describes the power of the subconscious mind but more importantly he describes the power of the conscious mind to change the subconscious mind.
What is the power of your subconscious mind?
The power of your subconscious mind lies in the immense and vast capacity, metaphorical speaking computer capacity, to run your life.
You just need to ponder on the miracle of your body running on an immense number of programs in perfect synchronization thanks to your subconscious mind.
Also think about all the activities you do effortlessly: walking, dancing, writing, speaking… etc. thanks to the power of your subconscious mind.
In addition, the power of your subconscious mind is allowing you to continuously create the hologram of your life even when you are not consciously focusing on choosing your thoughts and emotions.
The power of your subconscious mind in manifestation
Manifestation is the process by which you create your physical reality. Your subconscious mind consist of:
- Programs analogous to computer software program or apps. In the case of subconscious mind those programs are beliefs, perceptions, paradigms, programmed emotional reactions, programmed body responses, programmed fears etc.
- Your memories that are analogous to your personal files and information stored -either in the hardware of your computer or in the cloud.
- Your subconscious mind is also connected to everybody else subconscious mind through your electromagnetic field or aura. This is analogous to the vastness of information of the Internet.
- You are continuously generating a vibrational frequency that travels out through the electromagnetic frequency bands that surrounds you. Then, by virtue of the Law of Attraction, you attract opportunities and manifestations that match your vibrational frequency.
The power of your subconscious mind in manifestation is due to:
- High percentage of the time you are generating your vibrational frequency in automatic mode
- When you are in automatic mode, your subconscious mind is entirely running the show based on pre-set programs
- Your physical reality manifestations are physical equivalencies of the vibrational frequency that you are generating
- The quality of your manifestations is a result of the programs installed in the operating system of your subconscious mind

The doors of perception that William Blake is mentioning is his quote are the filters of perception programmed in your subconscious mind. If those filters are cleaned the programs or files of our higher-self knowing of infinite and limitless returns to your subconscious mind.
The power of your subconscious mind in healing
In the previous section we described the powerful role that the subconscious mind plays in your physical manifestations, this includes your body.
The power of your subconscious mind is continuously re-creating and running the physicality of your body based on pre-set programs. Therefore you can change your body if you change the programs. This is the basis of healing through the power of your subconscious mind.
When you re-program your subconscious mind for perfect health miraculous healings occur. In that case, the programs of your subconscious mind generate the vibrational equivalency of your body in perfect health and the body follows.
The power of your subconscious mind in financial abundance
Your financial abundance or lack of it including your income ceiling, savings, financial loss, debt etc. are a result of your wealth programs installed in your subconscious mind. If you do not have the financial abundance that you desire, there are programs in your subconscious mind that are preventing manifesting money abundantly.
Examples of some common programs about finances that are running in the subconscious mind of many of us are:
- If I make more than xx $/year I will lose my friends; therefore keep my income below xx $/year.
- Money is corrupt; therefore keep money away from me
- Money is hard to manage; therefore keep money away from me
- Rich people get killed; therefore keep money away from me
- Money is hard to get; therefore make it hard for me to get money
The power of your subconscious mind in relationships
Your relationships, both personal and professional are mirrors of the vibrational frequency equivalency of the programs of your subconscious mind.
Whatever you believe to be true about relationships and people, it will be demonstrated in your physical reality to support your belief.
For example, if you hold the belief in your subconscious that “People are always taking advantage of me”, you attract people to play the role of taking advantage of you.
On the other hand, if you hold the belief in your subconscious that “People are always kind and supportive of me”, you attract people that are kind and supportive.
The power of your conscious mind vs. your subconscious mind
Your subconscious mind analogous to a computer has an enormous capacity of executing programs as well as some capacity to create new programs analogous to artificial intelligence.
On the other hand, the conscious mind is the master with the power to re-program, change, delete and install new programs in the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is analogous to the programmer or coder that creates all those complex set of programs for the operating systems of computers and artificial intelligence.
Your conscious mind has the power of choosing and changing non-beneficial programs of the subconscious mind.
You have the power and freedom, through your conscious mind awareness, to harness the power of your subconscious mind to create your dream life. Raise frequency.
Original operating system of our subconscious mind
In the beginning of times when we first individuated ourselves, the operating system of our subconscious mind was programmed with the love-based knowing of our true self or higher self, such as:
- Infinite abundance
- Every being is an individualized expression of Source and simultaneously is the oneness and infiniteness of Source
- Every being is eternal
- Every being is immensely valuable and simultaneously is equally valuable to every other being
- Physicality is slow down energy. It is an illusion because is temporary. It is shapeable, changeable and can be sped up back to light
- Human beings are light beings having a physical experience
- Every human being has the power and freedom to create its reality in harmony with the oneness that it is
- There is an infinite amount of raw material (energy) for infinite number of physical manifestations that beings choose to create
- Every being is infinitely worthy of love, joy, peace, bliss, harmony, abundance and everything its heart desires in perfect harmony with the oneness that it is
Initially fear based programs did not exist in our subconscious human minds. Then, with our conscious mind, we decided to install programs analogous to artificial intelligence in our subconscious mind. These programs gave the subconscious mind the capacity of learning from the input data from our senses and emotions.
This was all well because we knew that with our conscious mind we are able to override and reprogram our subconscious mind. We were aware that physical reality is a movie perceived in 3D that we are creating moment to moment with the assistance of our powerful subconscious minds. We were aware that physical reality, including our physical body, is very malleable and temporary.
Viruses of our subconscious mind
As we delegated more and more functions of creating our physical world to the subconscious mind, – we began to forget our power of conscious creation. We also began to forget that physical reality is an illusion and it is temporary.
As we became more and more identified with physicality, we began to forget that we are eternal light beings. We also began to forget our oneness and became more and more identified with our individuality and separation.
As we observed that physicality has a temporary nature fear was experienced. In addition, as we accepted separation as our new belief even more fear was experienced.
As we forgot our conscious creation capabilities from an infinite source of energy, beliefs of lack were created. In turn, beliefs of lack and separation led to a chain of creation of numerous survive based beliefs of being unsafe.
These system of beliefs and programs of lack, scarcity, separation, being unsafe and powerless in the subconscious mind is called the altered ego.
In the meanwhile, our subconscious mind is generating vibrational frequencies aligned with our beliefs. Then, by virtue of the Law of Attraction, the Universe is mirroring back to us physical demonstrations that re-enforce our accepted beliefs of lack and limitations.
Welcome to the human experience of allowing our subconscious minds to be infected with a myriad of limiting and disempowering system of beliefs. The operating system of our powerful sub-conscious mind had become corrupted with all these viruses.
The main categories of these counterfeit system of beliefs or mind viruses, stored in the super-powerful computers of our subconscious minds, are:
- Lack and scarcity
- Separation from Source and each other
- Superiority and inferiority
- Being unsafe
- Limitations of our capabilities

How to enter your subconscious?
Now that you learned that your subconscious mind holds the information that is creating your physical reality, you might be asking: How do I access my subconscious mind? How do I become aware of the programs of my subconscious mind that are running my life?
To enter your subconscious mind and bring to your awareness information stored in it, you can use the following subconscious mind power techniques:
Become aware of the content of your mind chatter and reactions
Pay attention to your thoughts and associated emotions and feelings, and jot them down several times during the day.
Every time you are triggered pay close attention to your reactions and make notes
After one week approximately, review your notes. Do you notice any repeating patterns of thoughts-emotions? Do you notice any repeating patterns of reactions? Make notice and journal about your repeating thoughts, repeating reactions and repeating thoughts-emotions.
Notice how your repeating thoughts, repeating reactions and repeating thoughts-emotions are happening automatically through the power of your subconscious mind
Ask yourself and write down the answers to the following deep questions:
- What programs or beliefs are installed in my subconscious mind that is producing these repeating patterns?
- What programs about finances, relationship, health and life in general, am I running?
- What programs I have accepted as truths that are not benefiting me?
Enter into a meditative state
To enter into a meditative state means to slow down your brain waves to alpha brain waves or even deeper to theta brain wave. Your normal busy and doing brain wave activity is beta. When you put yourself in a state of calmness and being present in the moment of now, you go from beta to alpha and if you go even deeper into the meditative state you can reach theta.
You do not need any device to measure your brain waves activity; you just need to do the following:
- Close your eyes
- Take few deep breaths while you focus on your breathing
- Then focus on relaxing all muscles of your body starting from your face all the way down your feet
- Continue to focus on the sensations of your body for a few minutes
- Once you feel relaxed and calm, ask yourself: What beliefs are creating situation X in my life?
- Notice the answers, or thoughts or pictures that arise in your mind
- Open your eyes and write them down
- Continue to ask yourself questions and continue the journaling process
If you do not get answers right away be patient, continue asking and continue paying attention to your thoughts throughout the day. Answers might come when you least expect them.
Write down your dreams
Your dreams provide information about the contents of your subconscious mind.
Each night before you go to sleep set the intention of remembering your dreams and place a notepad next to your bed.
When you wake up in the morning, even before you go to the bathroom, write down whatever you can remember about your night dreams. Do not attempt to analyze them until you have finished the writing. Do that for at least a few weeks so you can recognize repeated, similar and certain patterns in your dreams.
A personal example: I used to have repeatedly dreams about losing money. Those dreams were showing me programs and beliefs engraved in my subconscious mind about my being money looser. These dreams were not surprising because in my physical reality I had lost money multiple times. As I worked on removing beliefs and programs of being a money looser and removing associated fears, the dreams stopped.
Another personal example: I used to have repeatedly dreams about not having a place or bed to sleep. Those dreams were showing me that I was holding in my subconscious mind programs of poverty and scarcity. These dreams were surprising to me because in this lifetime I have always being blessed with the physical comforts of a nice room and bed for sleeping.
As I worked on erasing my subconscious detrimental programs of lack and poverty, these repeating dreams did not show up anymore.
The examples of my repeating dreams that I just described were easy to interpret. However often time the subconscious mind shows messages through metaphors and symbols that might not be straightforward to interpret.

Discover unwanted repeating patterns
If you review the unwanted events of your present lifetime, you can discover your non-beneficial repeating patterns. In this way you can become aware of non-beneficial programs that are running in a loop in your subconscious mind.
We can define as unwanted events those that triggered or caused fears and/or emotional pain
To discover the unwanted repeating patterns do the following:
- List and write down all the unwanted events that you have experienced- start from childhood all the way to the present
- For each unwanted event list the emotions and fears that were triggered for you. How did the event make you feel?
- Compare the events and discover common themes. For example: Being rejected, being abandoned, loosing money, getting into car accidents, being physically abused etc.
- Ask yourself: What programs or conclusions that I have accepted as truth are running in my subconscious mind to keep creating pattern X?
Examples of programs underlining unwanted themes:
- Being rejected: I am not worthy of being accepted for who I am, I am not worthy of love, I deserve to be rejected etc.
- Being abandoned: The people I love keep abandoned me – I am not worthy of love – I deserve to be abandoned etc.
- Loosing money: I am money looser – It is unsafe to be wealthy – Money corrupts – I deserve to lose money etc.
- Getting into car accidents: I am a bad driver – It is unsafe to drive – The streets are full of bad drivers etc.
- Being physically abused: I deserve to be punished -The world is full of abusers etc.

Use applied kinesiology
Applied kinesiology is a method by which you can test to find out which programs or beliefs your subconscious mind accepted as truth. You get a yes or no through a spontaneous response of your body. Applied kinesiology is also called muscle testing or neuromuscular feedback or dowsing.
There are multiple techniques to do applied kinesiology, the most common one is when you extend your arm straight to one side and somebody else pushes down on your arm as you state the belief you are testing.
For example: You state “Money corrupts” and your arm is easily pushed down, that is a “No” answer. If your arm stays strong, then it is a “Yes” answer.
Before, you test the belief calibrate your yes/no answer by stating your name, or age or gender and the words yes/no.
Applied kinesiology is also called muscle testing or neuromuscular feedback because your muscle stays strong to what your subconscious mind believes to be true. Conversely your muscle goes weak to what your subconscious mind believes to be false.
For the arm pushed method, you need somebody else to help you with the muscle testing. If you prefer a muscle-testing technique that you can do without assistance of another person, the easiest technique is using your whole body:
Stand straight and relaxed with your feet slightly apart (30 cm aprox.), aligned with your shoulders. Say out loud yes and wait for a few seconds, your body will swing forward or backwards. For most people, a yes response is a forward swing while a no response is a backwards swing. However, your responses might be on reverse and that is fine. Just test it out with differences sentences that you know the answer to: name, gender, age etc.
An alternative technique for entering your subconscious mind and discovering its programs is the pendulum technique. For that you just hold in your fingers a chain with a medal or small weight and observe the directional movement or rotation of the suspended chain to the words yes and no.
Applied kinesiology is a very useful tool to help you enter your subconscious mind. It works very well as confirmation of the list of potential programs and beliefs you uncovered from analyzing your mind chatter, your dreams, and your repeating patterns.
I must mention that it takes practice to get confident and get reliable results with your muscle testing.
How to control your subconscious mind?
To control your subconscious mind you need to re-write the programs of your subconscious mind that are not aligned with what you desire to create and experience.
Analogous to the control you have to delete and install programs and applications from your computer, you can delete and install new programs from your subconscious mind.
Since your subconscious mind has the ability to learn from sensory and emotional input, the installation of programs occur both subconsciously and consciously.
To control your subconscious mind first you need to become aware of the content of your subconscious mind. We described some mind power techniques to do that in section of this article titled: How to enter your subconscious mind?
The second component of controlling your subconscious mind is the programming of it with beneficial beliefs, emotions, attitudes, perceptions and habits. In other words, it is the installation of beneficial files of programs.
The good news is that through your conscious mind you have the choice and power to re-program your subconscious mind.

Subconscious mind programming
At this point you might be asking: How does my subconscious mind get programmed? Who did I get my subconscious programs from? How to install beneficial programs into my subconscious mind?
First I will answers these questions in few sentences and then elaborate them in more detail:
- Your subconscious mind got programmed from traumas, positive peak emotional experiences, early childhood and repetition.
- You got your subconscious programming from your lineage, your soul path experiences charged with intense emotions, family, society, culture, media and your present lifetime traumas and positive peak experiences.
- In my experience, a very effective technique to transmute non-beneficial programming of your subconscious mind is to repair your core fractures.
What are the sources of your subconscious mind programming?
You are born with a myriad of programs in the operating system of your subconscious mind. These programs are handed out to you from your parents and ancestors.
If you do not believe in past lifetimes, just ignore this paragraph. For those of us that do believe in past lifetimes or parallel lifetimes we can discover that events from past lifetimes created some programs in our subconscious mind. These events from past lifetimes can show up in dreams or it can come to our awareness if we ask for.
Family and society
In our early childhood our subconscious mind is like a sponge uploading programs based on what is being modeled by parents, siblings, teachers, friends etc. The content of the programs created in early childhood are both a function of what is being modeled plus the already existing programs of our subconscious mind that shape our perceptions and interpretations.
Media and entertainment
The information that we fed to ourselves through media, TV and Internet has a great influence on our subconscious mind. The reason is that when we are absorbed watching a movie or playing a computer game as examples, – our brain waves are in alpha state, which is a receptive mode for our subconscious mind.
Present life experiences with high emotional charge
Events with a high emotional charge, either positive or negative emotions, are prioritized by our subconscious mind. This means that all the emotions, feelings, perceptions, conclusions and sensory associations are stored as important.
Therefore, if you go through an inventory of your present life experiences with high emotional charge, it will provide you with insights about programs stored in your subconscious mind.
What factors influence the uploading of subconscious mind programming?
There are several factors that influence the uploading of subconscious mind programming, these are:
High emotional charge
The interpretations and conclusions that the conscious mind makes with a high emotional charge are accepted by the subconscious mind as a truth (belief) and gets uploaded and embedded, together with sensory associations.
An example of an event with a high positive emotional charge is winning a contest and receiving a standing ovation for our performance. If at that moment we think or we are told: People loves you, the audience loves you, you are amazingly talented, you are a winner; – then these positive statements are uploaded and become a beneficial belief embedded in our subconscious mind.
On the other side of the spectrum, events with a highly negative emotional charge are uploaded to our subconscious mind together with the interpretations that we concluded about the event. The interpretations and conclusions of negatively charged events become limiting and disempowering beliefs and fears in our subconscious mind. High negative emotional charged events are usually referred as traumas.
Brain wave activity
Adults usually are functioning in beta brain wave during the waking hours. On the other hand, children at an early age function in alpha and theta brain wave.
Alpha and theta brain waves correspond to a peaceful meditative state of mind. In this state of mind, the subconscious is open to receive instructions for new programming.
Repetition is the method that we usually use for learning a skill or memorizing information. When we are acquiring a skill, for example learning to type with 10 fingers, we practice repeatedly with conscious focus until it becomes automatic.
We can perform many activities in auto-pilot, without conscious effort, thanks to the power of the subconscious mind. Habits are an example of behaviors we perform without conscious focus.
How to install beneficial programming into your subconscious mind?
There are many modalities and techniques that have been developed to program or re-program your subconscious mind. Some of these are:
Repairing Core Fractures
In a previous section of this article we described the nature of your original operating system of your subconscious mind. As you uploaded programs of fears, self-doubt, limitations and disempowerment (viruses) to your subconscious mind; – you fractured the original pristine operating system of your subconscious mind.
As a result of the fracturing, some of your files were corrupted and others were lost.
From your soul journey there is a remembrance of that original pristine blueprint of your subconscious mind. How do you avoid automatic non-beneficial programming of your subconscious mind?
Until you reach a level of consciousness of enlightenment, I am not sure you can completely avoid automatic non-beneficial programming to be uploaded to your subconscious mind. However you can minimize them plus you can clear them soon after they are uploaded, if you practice self-awareness.
Self-awareness is a daily practice of paying attention to your thoughts, emotions, feelings and reactions to life and other people. Journal about them and ask yourself daily:
- Are my thoughts coming from an empowering and abundance program or not?
- Which of my thoughts are limiting me or disempowering me?
- What would be an alternate thought or belief to program my subconscious mind with – that is in alignment with my true-self magnificence and abundance?
Then use daily your favorite re-programming subconscious mind modality or technique to install beneficial and empowering programs. As you do this consistently, you will gain momentum and you will be amazed of the joy and ease of your life.

In addition to the disempowering beliefs and fears uploaded during traumatic events, the subconscious mind also stores the associated sensory inputs. Traumatic events with intense emotional charge of fear are stored with associations of sound, smell, sight, taste and touch.
These results in the subconscious mind being triggered with fear and anxiety each time the environment provides any of the sensory inputs associated with the traumatic events.
The subconscious mind becomes oversensitive and hyper vigilant in its role to activate the alarm of a potential dangerous circumstance.
Post Traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD) and phobias are the result of oversensitivity, hyper vigilance and over-reaction of the subconscious mind fear based programs uploaded during traumatic events.
Some examples of PTSD responses of the subconscious mind are:
A soldier witness as fellow soldiers are killed during an encounter with the enemy forces in the mist of the sound of artillery bullets being fired. The soldier subconscious mind makes an association of the sounds with death. Then when he returns to normal life, each time he hears any loud sound, his subconscious mind fires the same intense response of fear and anxiety he experienced in the battlefield.
A lady that was sexually abused is triggered with and intense fear and anxiety response each time she walks down the aisle of deodorants in the supermarket. Her subconscious mind picks up the smell of the deodorant of her rapist and elicits an intense response of anxiety and fear, as an alarm of a potential danger.
An example of phobia responses of the subconscious mind is:
A child gets trapped alone in the elevator of the building he lives in. He does not know what to do and he enters into panic. His parents rescue him after about 15 minutes but the impression of intense panic and fear associated with elevators remains in his subconscious mind. He developed phobia of elevators and even as an adult, he avoids elevators at all cost.

Subconscious mind and resistance to change
The nature of the subconscious mind is sameness as opposed to change. Some people have compared the subconscious mind with a thermostat working at keeping your life running according to the pre-set set-points.
The nature of sameness of your subconscious mind is due to:
First, by virtue of the Law of Attraction, the programs of your subconscious mind are manifested in your physical reality. In other words, your physical reality is a mirror of the programs of your subconscious mind
This forms a feedback loop that re-enforces and strengthens the programs of your subconscious mind. Your beliefs of your truth are based on your physical manifestations – which in turn are being created through the programming of your subconscious mind.
Second, the information you perceive through your senses is filtered down by your subconscious mind. In other words, the filters or programs of your subconscious mind color what you notice and perceive from the environment.
Third, the thoughts that you accept and process in your brain are a function of the programs of your subconscious mind. You are bathed in an infinite number of thoughts and your subconscious mind selects thoughts that are familiar and in alignment with the installed programs. The same thoughts are running in a loop until you change the programs or beliefs of your subconscious mind.
The realm of new and change lies in the conscious mind power to reprogram the subconscious mind. Therefore if you like to make changes in your life, you need to install new programs in your subconscious mind using the power of your conscious mind.

If you are desiring to reach some goals in life, and feeling that you are pushing against seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Sabotage occurs because your conscious and sub-conscious minds are opposing each other. Conscious you desire to reach your goals. However, subconsciously there are programs that resist the change.
A typical example is people who are not losing weight despite their desire and efforts to do so.
